About Mountain Leader Training Scotland

Someone in the Brenin WallThe Scottish Mountain Leader Training Board was set up in the 1960’s under the auspices of the Scottish Sports Council to oversee to the administration of the Mountain Leader Award in Scotland. In 1965 the Winter Mountain Leader Award was established and the SMLTB took on the responsibility of administering that award as well. In 1997 the Board became independent from the Scottish Sports Council, then sportscotland, and its office moved to its present location in Glenmore.
Since then the SMLTB has changed its name to Mountain Leader Training Scotland and become a Company Limited by Guarantee and recognized as a Scottish Charity. It now administers the Mountain Leader Award, the Single Pitch Award, the Climbing Wall Award, the Walking Group Leader Award and the Winter Mountain Leader Award in Scotland

MLTS is repsonsible for all aspects of these schemes, from registration to quality control. Award courses in Scotland are run by approved course providers who are moderated on a regular basis to ensure parity of standards. MLTS works closely with the other home nations and co-ordinates with these bodies and others such as the Mountaineering Councils and both voluntary and professional organisations to ensure harmonisation of the schemes throughout the UK.
