Developments in Single Pitch and Mountain Leader Awards Reviews are now complete for the Mountain Leader (ML) and Single Pitch Award (SPA) resulting in very few changes to the basic syllabus but a range of developments in the guidance notes.
The Mountaineering
Instructor Award (Summer, known as the MIA, is for instructors
working in summer conditions and covers multi-pitch rock climbing,
scrambling and other mountaineering .
Registration Requirements
All potential candidates must first register for the Mountaineering
Instructor Scheme and satisfy the following conditions.
You must:
i be at least 20 years of age
ii have completed a Mountain Leader Award
(Summer)
iii have completed 20 quality mountain days
(See Appendix I) as a leader in sole charge of a mixed ability
group. These should not be repeat days and should be obtained
in a period following completion of the ML.
iv have substantial climbing experience
and be able to list a minimum of 30 named multi-pitch rock climbs
of VS4c standard or above which you have led in at least 3 main
climbing areas of the UK. These routes should represent the
breadth of your climbing experience. A large proportion of these
routes should be on mountain crags and major sea cliffs.
v Identify a suitable referee to endorse
the registration application, preferably a Mountaineering Instructor,
Guide or ML Centre staff member, but other long term climbing
partner or suitable employer will be considered.
Training
The MIA training course last a minimum of nine consecutive days.
The three approved providers, Glenmore Lodge, Plas y Brenin and
Tollymore, run their courses throughout most of the year based
in the Cairngorms, Snowdonia and the Mournes respectively.
Consolidation
At the end of your course the training staff will develop with
you a personal action plan that will guide you through this phase
of the sceheme (usually a minimum of twelve months, though candidates
with exceptional experience can apply for exemption from this
requirement)
Assessment
The assessment last for a minimum of five days and includes personal
climbing, problem solving, teaching climbing, mountaineering skills,
navigation and general knowledge. As a minimum assessment candidates
must have:
Completed a further
twenty quality mountain days
Completed twenty days teaching rock climbing
Completed a further twenty multi-pitch climbs
at VS4c or above in three areas of the UK
Hold a valid first aid certificate
