Developments in Single Pitch and Mountain Leader Awards
Reviews are now complete for the Mountain Leader (ML) and Single Pitch Award (SPA) resulting in very few changes to the basic syllabus but a range of developments in the guidance notes.

The Mountaineering Instructor Certificate - MIC

The scheme is for individuals teaching and leading winter mountaineering, snow and ice climbing and related activities.

Registration Requirements
All potential candidates must first register for the Mountaineering Instructor Certificate Scheme and satisfy the following conditions.
You must

  • i have completed the Winter Mountain Leader Award
  • ii have completed the Mountaineering Instructor Award (summer)
  • iii have completed 20 days logged experience of winter party management (this can be both pre and post winter ML, but at least 10 days must be post.
  • Iv have logged at least twenty routes at grade II or above in a minimum of three main areas of the UK, of which 10 should be Grade III.
    Training


The MIC training course last a minimum of fice consecutive days. The two approved providers, Glenmore Lodge and Plas y Brenin run their courses throughout most of the winter in the Highlands.

Consolidation
At the end of your course the training staff will develop with you a personal action plan that will guide you through this phase of the scheme (usually a minimum of twelve months)

Assessment
The assessment last for a minimum of five days and includes personal climbing, problem solving, teaching climbing, mountaineering skills, navigation and general knowledge. As a minimum assessment candidates must have
Completed a further ten mountain days of winter party management
Completed a further five days climbing experience at Grade II or above
Appropriate experience to ensure that they are climbing at Grade III standard or above
Hold a valid first aid certificate
